Jamie Guardino is, hands down, Albay’s Nigella Lawson of Cakes combining impeccable looks and mastery of her craft. Armed with an impressive resume whipping Yummy magazine-approved cakes, she’s faculty at the Institute for Culinary Arts and Related Studies, the first culinary school in Bicol. RIZZA LANA, Entrepreneur, Albay
Entrepreneur Rizza Lana did not have to look any further as her passions bloomed into thriving businesses that involve cats, skin care and sheer creativity. She also juggles managing her cat-themed cafe in Las Pinas, a curio shop and her new cosmetics line aptly called Lana. Lana, or “oil’ in Bicol is her latest brand baby: a cosmetic line that boasts of making use of essential oils for skin care.
DJAI BASINO, Visual Artist, Albay
Djai needs no further introduction. We know her for the allure of every swirl that goes into her works and the in-your-face femininity of an otherwise punk-authored painting. Besides slaying art shows and exhibits on this side of the region, Djai makes sure to give back and help the youth gain familiarity with the art scene.
BHEM YUZON, Tourism Officer, Sorsogon
Meet Sorsogon’s Tourism Babe. As one of the youngest Tourism Officers ever appointed in Bicol, Bhem gives fresh insights in making Sorsogon known worldwide. She’s one of the reasons why your Facebook feeds are filled with insane videos filled with beautiful drone shots of Sorsogon’s shorelines, or why your Instagram is ten times more Sorsogon beach-y than ever before.
VALERIE CHAN, Coffee Entrepreneur, Albay
Entrepreneurship does run in the family: Valerie Chan grew up in a family of restaurateurs and businessmen. But apart from being half of the team behind her café in Albay, she is also the barista, crafting highly sought-after house specialties. She recently spearheaded the first ever Bicol Barista Challenge—inviting the region’s top coffee contenders to compete for the title.
RACHELLE DAGNALAN, Furniture Designer, Albay
Rada Collab’s Chief designer breathes life into anything she creates. She reimagines local flair and ingenuity with her stellar furniture and homeware designs, stunning international cities such as Milan during their shows. DOMINIQUE LAGRIMAS, TV Personality/Former Beauty Queen, Camarines Sur
She’s got a radiance that is unequivocally magayon. Bicol’s darling graces our TV screens every Sunday’s show MagTV na Oragon and SIRAM; a food and travel show aired via The Filipino Channel and ABS-CBN. Energized by her travels, she shares her passion for loving our region as there is so much more to see in this part of the country. And with her voice and influence, Dom is a strong online presence even without blogging.
BETINA BORDEOS, Power Lifter/CrossFit Training Coach, Albay
Strong and empowered, Betina Bordeos breaks the mold and literally carries the weight over her shoulder. A competitive powerlifter, a Crossfit coach and Philippines’ Strongest Woman for 2016, she is one tough Bicolana you don’t want to mess with. Amassing numerous medals and international acclaim, Betina has done her country proud.
IRIS CENETA, Fashion Designer, Albay
Pret-a-porter is happening in Albay, ladies, and designer Iris Ceneta is one of the reasons behind it. Inspired by her many travels and education at the premier Central Saint Martins in London, Iris slays ever drape with the allure of a Vania Romoff and the succinct tailoring of a Carolina Herrera. MARIA VENUS RAJ, Beauty Queen and Social Worker, Camarines Sur
After perhaps a historic feat to end the country’s Miss Universe drought,
Maria Venus Raj has and will always be a trailblazer. This beauty queen turned model/actress and TV host returned to school and finished a Master’s degree in Community Development from the University of the Philippines. Her thesis on Disaster Resilience and Spirituality echoes the Bicolano spirit that despite countless struggles and whirlwinds, with faith and solidarity we rise up and grow from it.
